Cape Town is one of the most recognisable cities in the world, offering an irresistible mix of mountains, beaches, vibrant culture, and wildlife. With its incredible food and wine scene – and the renowned wine region just a short drive away – Cape Town is a destination where you can easily while away a week exploring the city and its beautiful environs.

From the iconic V&A Waterfront to the upscale neighbourhood of Bantry Bay there's a perfect place for every traveller.

Getting to Know Cape Town

Cape Town is a city of diverse districts, each offering unique attractions and experiences.

Other than Table Mountain, most people know the V&A Waterfront as a key landmark in the city. The waterfront is a bustling hub with a mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. You'll also find the Two Oceans Aquarium here,  and a variety of boat trips, including those out to Robben Island. Green Point sits just west of the waterfront.

Let's take a closer look at four popular areas to stay in Cape Town working south and west around the coast from the waterfront. These areas put you in an ideal position for exploring the city and it's attractions,  with the V&A Waterfront to the north, easy access to Table Mountain, and the Cape Peninsula (Hout Bay, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach, False Bay, Fish Hoek) all to the south.

Oranjezicht

Situated around 5km (3 miles) inland from the V&A Waterfront, bordered by Signal Hill to the west and Table Mountain to the south, Oranjezicht is a quiet residential area. The inclines around here can be quite steep so most people skip the 3kms (1.9 mile) uphill walk to the Table Mountain Cableway in favour of a 10 minute drive!

This district is within walking distance of various mountain's trails,  and offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscapes.

You'll find a number of good quality guesthouses in Oranjezicht and neighbouring Tamboarskloof. Oranjezicht makes a lovely quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the city while still being close to central Cape Town and it's attractions.

Four Rosmead, set in a beautifully restored historic house, combines classic architecture with contemporary decor. It offers a homely experience with only a few rooms.

While in Oranjezicht, visit the Oranjezicht City Farm Market, a community-driven project offering fresh local produce and a great place for breakfast or lunch.

Sea Point

Along the coast, west of the V&A Waterfront, is Sea Point - a lively area with a beautiful promenade along the Atlantic Ocean, offering scenic views and a vibrant nightlife.

You can walk from Sea Point to the V&A Waterfront along the Sea Point Promenade with views of the Atlantic Ocean all the way. The distance is approximately 3 to 4kms (about 2 to 2.5 miles), depending on your starting point in Sea Point, and it takes about 45 minutes at a moderate pace. This walk is popular with locals and visitors alike, offering a safe and enjoyable route with plenty of spots to stop and enjoy the view.

Sea Point is only a short drive away from Table Mountain, making it a convenient base for exploring the city's natural and urban attractions.

The Winchester Hotel, a historic landmark here, offers views of the ocean, and is perfectly located for sunset walks along the promenade. The hotel features classic interiors and easy access to Sea Point's diverse dining and nightlife scene.

Bantry Bay

Just a short drive southwest from Sea Point, Bantry Bay is a quieter, upscale neighbourhood known for its stunning ocean views and luxurious accommodations. Lion's Head looks over Bantry Bay providing a dramatic setting. The beaches of Clifton and the Sea Point Promenade are within walking distance but for Camps Bay or the Waterfront you will need to drive or taxi.

The area is less crowded than Camps Bay, offering a more exclusive environment.

Ellerman House is the epitome of luxury here, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Renowned for its extensive collection of South African art, Ellerman House also features a full-service spa and wellness centre. This intimate, luxurious retreat is ideal for art enthusiasts, honeymooners, and luxury seekers looking for privacy and sophistication.

In Bantry Bay, visit the Clifton Beaches, a series of four stunning beaches each offering a unique vibe, or take a short drive to explore the vibrant café culture of Sea Point.

Camps Bay

Further south along the coast, Camps Bay is famous for its beautiful beach and trendy restaurants and cafes. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists looking for a lively beachfront experience. Both Camps Bay beach and quieter Bakoven beach are walkable from accommodation in and around the bay, as is the base of the Twelve Apostles for those interested in nature trails/hiking.

Sea Five Boutique Hotel is just a short stroll from the famous Camps Bay Beach. It features elegantly designed rooms with ocean or mountain views, lovely gardens and attentive service. Sea Five Boutique Hotel is perfect for couples and beach lovers looking for a stylish and relaxing getaway.

While in Camps Bay, take a walk along the beach, enjoy a meal at one of the many seaside restaurants, or hike up to the Twelve Apostles for breathtaking views.
