A Record-Breaking Journey
The Arctic Tern is nature’s long-distance champion, migrating over 70,000 km annually between the Arctic and Antarctic. These birds breed in the Arctic during the Northern Hemisphere summer and travel to the Antarctic to feed during the Southern Hemisphere summer, experiencing more daylight than any other species.
When and Where to See Arctic Terns
Arctic (June–August): The Arctic summer is the best time to observe Arctic Terns nesting and raising their young. They can be seen along the coastlines of Greenland, Svalbard, and Iceland.
Antarctic (November–February): During the Antarctic summer, terns are spotted feeding in the Southern Ocean’s rich waters. Their graceful flight and distinct calls are a highlight of any polar cruise.
Travel with Purpose
Small expedition cruises offer a unique way to experience the Arctic and Antarctic while respecting these fragile ecosystems. Cruises operate during the optimal viewing seasons, providing opportunities to see Arctic Terns alongside other remarkable wildlife, including penguins in the south and polar bears in the north.
