Long Chin Wan was just 12 when she entered Sketch for Survival Junior 2022. She won the Junior Artist of the Year Award in the 8-12 year category with her artwork of a tiger. It was great to meet her, and her family at our exhibition in London.
Award-winning Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler who joined our selection panel said: "The young artist used photographic reference but still managed to convey a strong impression and to show the beauty of the animal. I especially like the way the close-up of the tiger’s head fills the space on the sheet."
Izabela Miklosova aged 16, entered Sketch for Survival Junior via Kosice Art School, in Slovakia. She won the Junior Artist of the Year Award in the 13-16 age category for her wonderful humphead wrasse. Although Izabela could not attend the private view at Oxo Tower Wharf in London to collect her award we were able to send it to her and it was lovely to receive a picture of her with it!
Our head judge Axel Scheffler heaped praise on Izabela's artwork: "My number one is the fish, for the dynamism of the drawing, colours and sense of space. It is the most original of the shortlist."
Delphine Yap was shortlisted in the 8-12 year old category with her Iberian Lynx, and came along with her friends to see her artwork, alongside the other shortlisted pieces. Here she is with her school friends (Delphine is second from right).
Axel Scheffler said: "I really like the naturalism in this picture, it deftly conveys the beauty of the cat."
I had the pleasure of meeting 16-year-old Serena Shek, shortlisted in the 13-16 year old category with her lovely artwork of a red panda. Serena came along with her mum to our event at the Explorers Club in New York in October. We were able to give Serena + Mum a little tour of the club including time on the terrace, as seen in the picture!
