Nalla the puma cub
This is Nalla when she was rescued in January 2021 - look at Nalla now!
Do you remember Nalla the puma cub? She was found orphaned just before Christmas 2020, a victim of the exotic pet trade, and was transfererd to the Oncafari rewilding centre in the Pantanal in January 2021. Through Sketch for Survival we supported Nalla's re-wilding and I am very pleased to let you know that Nalla is now 2 years old and a beautiful big cat.
She has moved to a much larger enclosure, which opened last year. She has two 5 month-old brother puma cubs (Chico and Tiano) that were rescued from Campo Grande for company. The new enclosure maintains the vegetation and the same characteristics of the external environment, so that the animals can learn to hunt and interact with their natural habitat, while being monitored by the team.
Nalla has been hunting succesfully and this is a very good sign, giving us hope that she will live wild and free one day.
Oncafari's rewilding centre has recently received an orphaned jaguar named Xamã. The cub was discovered in August but has spent five months receiving veterinary care - he was very small, weak and frightened when he was rescued. He is around 8 months old now and will start his journey back to the wild at Oncafari's 15-thousand-metre-square centre. The team will endeavour to teach him the skills his mother would have given him. Xamãwas most likely a victim of the fires which swept through this region.
