On 14 November, join us at the Royal Geographical Society for On the Edge, where Rebecca Stephens MBE, the first British woman to summit Mount Everest and conquer all Seven Summits, will share some of her incredible experiences from around the globe.
Rebecca’s story is one of transformation—from a journalist intrigued by the mountains to a record-breaking climber and conservation advocate. In 1989, she accompanied an Anglo-American expedition on Everest’s North East Ridge, a 10-week trip that would change her life forever.
Seduced by the history and beauty of Everest, and by the camaraderie of the expedition, she made the bold decision to return, but this time as a climber. In 1993, Rebecca, alongside Sherpas Ang Passang and Kami Tchering, became the first British woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. She went on to complete all Seven Summits, climbing the highest peak on every continent—from Denali in Alaska to Mount Vinson in Antarctica.
Rebecca’s expeditions have taken her to some of the most remote and extreme environments on the planet. She has led treks across the frozen wilderness of Antarctica, retracing Ernest Shackleton's route across South Georgia, and has guided expeditions in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia's Simien Mountains, Bhutan, Ladakh, and the high passes of Nepal. Through her travels, she has developed a deep appreciation for the world’s wildest places, where she has witnessed first-hand the effects of climate change and habitat loss on fragile ecosystems.
Most recently, Rebecca led an expedition to Sikkim, India, commemorating the centenary of Mallory and Irvine’s disappearance on Everest. Her trek followed in their footsteps through Darjeeling and Kalimpong, along the Singalila Ridge, which offers sweeping views of the Himalayas. It was a journey that paid homage to their pioneering spirit and showcased Rebecca’s enduring connection to the mountains.
Rebecca’s work as a motivational speaker and leadership coach is influenced by life lessons acquired in the mountains. She is passionate about helping others build resilience, develop leadership skills, and overcome challenges, drawing on her own experiences in some of the world’s most demanding environments.
A long-time trustee of the Himalayan Trust UK, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary, Rebecca has spent more than 20 years supporting local communities in the Himalayas, particularly the Sherpas who make Himalayan expeditions possible.
